Reports: Obama Mulling Sanctions on Israel

The Obama administration is refusing to discuss reports that emerged early Thursday claiming that the White House is considering imposing sanctions on Israel for continuing construction on Jewish homes in Jerusalem.

State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf dodged several questions on Thursday when confronted with reports that the administration had held secret internal meetings to discuss taking action against Israel for its ongoing building in East Jerusalem.

The classified meetings were reportedly held several weeks ago and included officials from both the State Department and White House, according to the Israeli daily Ha’aretz, which first reported on the meetings.

The possibility of sanctioning Israel for its ongoing construction sends a signal that the Obama administration is willing to go further in its denunciations of Israel then any previous White House.

At the same time, the White House is vigorously pushing Congress against passing new sanctions on Iran.

When asked to address the reports Thursday afternoon, Harf declined to take a stance.

“I’m obviously not going to comment one way or another on reported internal deliberations,” she said. “We’ve made clear our position on settlement activity publicly and that hasn’t changed.”

When pressed to address whether the White House has reached a point at which it believes its harsh rhetoric against Israel is not enough, Harf again demurred, stating that she would not “address hypotheticals.”

A White House National Security Council (NSC) official also would not comment on the report when contacted Thursday by the Washington Free Beacon.

News of the supposed meeting leaked to the press though Israeli officials who were apparently apprised of the discussion.

Senior Israeli officials told Haaretz “that White House officials held a classified discussion a few weeks ago about the possibility of taking active measures against the settlements,” according to the report.

The discussion about levying sanctions on Israel reportedly began after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s October meeting at the White House and the subsequent battle between Washington and Jerusalem over settlement construction.

The thought of the White House leveling sanctions on Israel as it works to lessen those already imposed on Iran prompted consternation on Capitol Hill and throughout the pro-Israel world.

One senior congressional aide who works on the issue of Israel expressed shock that a White House could even discuss such action.

“If these reports are true, this would mark a new era of unprecedented hostility from the White House against our strongest ally in the Middle East,” the source said. “It’s impossible not to notice the irony of the administration mulling sanctions on Israel while threatening to veto new sanctions against Iran.”

The aide added: “The president should be forewarned that taking such action against Israel would yield tremendous pushback from Congress.”

Those in the pro-Israel world expressed a similar view when reached for comment.

“Even this administration, which has been historically hostile to our Israeli allies, even as they worked overtime to bomb the enemies of Iranian proxies across the Middle East, could not possibly be so aggressively committed to undermining our alliances as to levy sanctions against Israel at the same time they’re lifting them on Iran,” said one senior official with a pro-Israel organization who agreed to speak only on background.

Others took a more critical view.

“The Obama administration is against sanctions on Iran, but for them on Israel,” said Noah Pollak, executive director of the pro-Israel organization Emergency Committee for Israel. “Is [White House deputy national security adviser] Ben Rhodes wearing a green headband to work these days?”

A Resounding Public Support for Palestine Around the World
Politicians holding down the floodgates against a public display of support for the state of Palestine were embarrassed in recent weeks. As soon as these political gatekeepers allowed their rank and file to express their positions, tremendous backing came for Palestine and its people. This happened in the British House of Commons, where an overwhelming number of MPs voted for Palestine, followed by Spain and, this week, by France.

GOP Chairman: We Should Legislate That Not One Person Is Thrown Out or Deported
During a House Rules Committee hearing on legislation to curb some of the reach in President Obama’s executive action on immigration, Chairman Pete Sessions (R-Tex.) said he was working with House Judiciary Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.) to push a bill to ensure that not one illegal is removed from the United States “unless they were dangerous to this country and committed a crime.”

Report: Obama Eyes Sanctions on Israel While Giving Iran a Pass
Senior White House and State Department officials have recently met to discuss the possibility of imposing sanctions on Israel in an effort to stop housing construction projects in eastern Jerusalem. The report – which comes as the Obama administration is lobbying furiously against new sanctions on Iran over its illicit nuclear program — is likely to trigger new bipartisan concern on Capitol Hill over the direction of U.S. Mideast policy.

Japanese Paper Apologizes for Anti - Semitic Ad

A conservative Japanese daily on Saturday apologized for carrying an advertisement for books by an anti-Semitic author who claims Jewish people were behind the country's 2011 earthquake-tsunami disaster.

The advert ran in a regional edition of the Sankei Shimbun national newspaper on November 26, and promoted the works of Richard Koshimizu, a self-styled journalist and activist who also blames Jews for the September 11, 2001 terror attacks in the United States.

A little-known figure in Japan, Koshimizu used the promotional space to market a book claiming the United States is a "Jewish dictatorship state" that detonated an atomic bomb deep underwater to deliberately trigger the earthquake and subsequent tsunami.

It was intended to destroy the Japanese economy and defend the dollar, he outrageously claimed.

"It is extremely regrettable that an advertisement of this content was carried and delivered to our readers, and we deeply apologize to readers and the people of the Jewish community," Sankei president Takamitsu Kumasaka said in a statement published in the paper.

"It was obvious there was a fault in our screening of advertisements," he said. The Sankei said the ad was in the Tokai/Hokuriku edition covering central Japan, which has a circulation of just 5,000 copies.

The March 2011 natural disaster sparked the Fukushima nuclear plant meltdown and left 18,000 people dead or missing.

In another book featured in the same advertisement, Koshimizu claims the Holocaust was a "fabrication" designed to establish the state of Israel.

Kumasaka added he had received a letter of protest from Abraham Cooper, associate dean of Jewish rights group the Simon Wiesenthal Center, over the advert.

"The Sankei considers the Holocaust by the Nazis as an unforgivable, heinous crime," the president said.

Japan has a very small Jewish community, which mostly consists of visiting Israeli businessmen and those remaining from the Jewish communities that fled Europe into the country from the Holocaust. There was a large community established in the port city of Kobe, with many reaching Japan via Shanghai.

Japan and Israel are currently rapidly strengthening their relations, with a large Israeli delegation leaving for Japan last month after a visit by Japan's Deputy Foreign Minister the month before, and after the signing of an Industrial R&D Agreement in July which is the first such agreement Japan has signed.

Congress Demands Clarification on Obama Israel Sanctions Report

45 GOP Congressmen demand president clarify reports White House considering sanctions against Israel for Jerusalem building.

45 Republican Congressmen fired off a stern letter to President Barack Obama demanding that he “clarify recent reports” which suggest his Administration has held classified meetings over the past several weeks to discuss the possibility of imposing sanctions against Israel for its decision to construct homes in eastern Jerusalem.

Congressman Mark Meadows tweeted that the anti-Israel sanction reports were “appalling.”

The letter, published Friday, further warned that “Israel is one of our strongest allies, and the mere notion that the Administration would unilaterally impose sanctions against Israel is not only unwise, but is extremely worrisome. Such reports send a clear message to our friends and enemies alike that such alliances with the United States government can no longer be unquestionably trusted.”

In the wake of numerous Obama “executive orders” - including an amnesty for illegal immigrant and Obamacare, which Republicans have alleged are “illegal” - the 45 congressmen emphasized that “at no point in time has Congress given the [Obama] Administration the authority to sanction Israel. In fact, Congress has continued to show its unwavering support for Israel and has recently taken steps to increase our economic and military cooperation.”

It was widely reported last week that the State Department Deputy Spokesperson Marie Harf dodged questions on whether the Administration would pursue sanctions. And on Friday, White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest failed to give a definitive yes or no answer when asked about the Administration’s position during the White House press briefing.

In view of the uncertainty that these reports caused, the congressmen made clear that while “it is our hope that these reports are untrue, the fact that your Administration has failed to denounce or clarify them is deeply troubling. The United States must stand firm in its commitments to Israel, or we risk fracturing our relationship with Israel and other key partners across the globe.”

And in a dramatically ominous sign of the deteriorating congressional Democratic Party support for Israel, there were no Democratic congressmen as co-authors or co-signatories to the letter.

The report, which was leaked by far-left Israeli paper Haaretz, coincides somewhat suspiciously with the collapse of Israel's Likud-led coalition government, and the announcement of snap elections - leading some analysts to speculate it is an attempt to influence the outcome of next March's general elections

Speaking to Arutz Sheva Friday, Professor Shmuel Sandler - an expert on US-Israeli relations at the Begin-Sadat Center for Strategic Studies - noted that both Haaretz and the White House have never made any effort to hide their dislike for the current government and prime minister, and could potentially have coordinated the link "to influence the public" to vote for a more left-wing government,

In another up the sentiments of many Israeli and American observers, Congressman Meadows asked: “What message does it send to the world for the US to impose sanctions against Israel while easing sanctions against Iran - a state-sponsor of terror with an abysmal human rights record?”
